  • Start: Waldeck-Nieder-Werbe hiking car park
  • Destination: Waldeck Castle car park
On this stage, the Urwaldsteig between Nieder-Werbe and the town of Waldeck is hiked. Here you can expect fascinating forest images and views.

Starting from Nieder-Werbe, follow the Urwaldsteig up to the Mühlecke. Fascinating forest images and views await you there.

On a slate-covered, lichen-covered steep slope, the forest of gnomes and mythical creatures grows from oak and beech trees. For those who can tear themselves away, the trail continues along the EderseeA slope with stunted forests and views continues until you reach the Bärentalbach stream. The stream has carved deep into the rock. Water, moist air, and nutrients from the Zechstein massif above foster a lush flora.

A wooden bridge takes you onto the serpentine path steeply out of the stream valley. The Urwaldsteig then leads slowly down through natural forests into Waldecker Bay.

Finally, we go up the Schlossberg and reach the stage destination Waldeck with the castle that towers over everything.

In general it should "AST-Taxi" (call shared taxi) be included in the planning. With the call-to-collect taxis (AST), the NVV ensures mobility on routes that are not in such high demand. Instead of taking the bus, you can travel here in normal taxis or rental cars. AST also have fixed timetables - all you have to do is (usually) call in to request a trip up to 30 minutes before the trip. Also consider that AST only operate if no normal buses are running parallel.

Our tip

The climb to the Schlossberg can be saved at the end with the nostalgic “Waldecker mountain railway”.

Visiting the national park and using all paths is therefore at your own risk! Please do not go into the forest in strong winds, heavy rain or snowfall.

Way markings

You can reach the special features of the national park via the marked hiking trails. Circular trails from the national park's hiking car parks are marked with animal or plant symbols. There are “sign trees” with place names at selected crossroads. They are landmarks for the hiker.
