"Hunter of the night...!" - "Flying vampires...?" - "Where do they actually live...?" - "What do they actually look like...?" - These are all questions that interested observers ask themselves again and again. The bats have been observed for several years by some committed citizens of the Asel district. Occupancy, nurseries, summer and winter quarters are registered, counts are made and this educational trail is maintained!
Due to the geographical location of the town of Asel, bordered by extensive contiguous forest areas, several hectares of arable land and meadows, wet meadows with streams, natural wetlands, and the immediate proximity to the extended Kellerwald National Park,Edersee, the populations of the still highly endangered bats have fortunately stabilized in this region.
Furthermore, the ecological management of agricultural land has contributed to creating improved habitats for this animal species. This circumstance gave the village community the idea of creating the country's first bat nature trail in order to draw attention to the mysterious world of the actually "unknown" animals.
At various stations you can test your knowledge and get lots of interesting information about bats. The information boards and the diorama at the water treading facility provide a lot of information about bats.
If you want to hike the bat nature trail, you can park your car at the DGH and start hiking from there. The path leads through the adjacent forest. The diorama mentioned above is on the grounds of the water treading facility. There are many bat specimens on display here. Here you can marvel at the animals up close.

In general it should "AST-Taxi" (call shared taxi) be included in the planning. With the call-to-collect taxis (AST), the NVV ensures mobility on routes that are not in such high demand. Instead of taking the bus, you can travel here in normal taxis or rental cars. AST also have fixed timetables - all you have to do is (usually) call in to request a trip up to 30 minutes before the trip. Also consider that AST only operate if no normal buses are running parallel.

Our tip
A visit to the bat nature trail can also include a look into the bat tower. The converted transformer house is normally locked. Here you can marvel at the other hunters of the night, such as badgers, foxes, martens, raccoons, a barn owl and various bat specimens. To do this, simply call the mayor of Asel-Süd (see www.fledermauslehrpfad.de).

The nature trail leads through shady forests and open terrain. Occasionally trees may have toppled over and branches may have fallen onto the path. Use of the bat nature trail is at your own risk. You should not walk the nature trail in strong winds, heavy rain or snowfall.
Driving with strollers or wheelchairs is not possible or is only possible to a limited extent. Please keep dogs on a leash! Riding on the bat nature trail is prohibited. Please leave the bat nature trail as you found it so that the next visitor can enjoy it too.
