Waldeck Evangelical City Church

The Evangelical City Church in Waldeck is one of the 14 churches located on Edersee and along the Eder Cycle Path. Equipped with a multimedia, accessible information system, the churches allow you to immerse yourself in the history of the church and the respective location, listen to devotions and musical pieces, solve puzzles, or get tips for your onward journey.

On a plaque at the entrance to the Waldecker town church it says: "In this church, for the first time in the Waldecker region, God's word was proclaimed according to Luther's teachings by Johannes Hefentreger" (June 17, 1526). In addition, the late Gothic hall church houses the oldest carved altarpiece in the Waldecker region .

The choir is the oldest part of the church and was started to be built around 1300. Only the choir and western wall remain of the original single-nave church building.

The ship in its current form was expanded in the 16th century. The tower was built on the northeast side of the choir, like the fortified churches in Bergheim and Affoldern.

The inscription above one of the windows on the east side “In the YEAR CHI (=Christ) 1560” indicates the time when it was built. 

In 1425 the church had three altars. There is evidence that the Waldeck church was equipped with a fourth altar, a Marian altar, in 1483.

The carved altar with painted wings depicts the coronation of Mary by the Trinity. Veneration of the mother of Jesus was widespread in the late Middle Ages.

The altarpiece was donated in her honor by the abbess of the Berich monastery, Margarete Huhn, who can be traced back to between 1460 and 1499.
