Basdorf Evangelical Church

The Evangelical Church in Basdorf is one of the 14 churches located on Edersee and along the Eder Cycle Path. The Protestant church in Basdorf has been the center of the town for centuries. The current church was completed and dedicated in 1863. It was built between 1861 and 1863 by mountain master Pfannmüller from Thalitter. The nave has a gallery and is roofed with a wooden coffered ceiling. The altar window, which is supposed to represent the three articles of the creed, is also worth seeing.

However, there were one or more previous buildings. A chapel in Basdorf is mentioned in the synodal register of the Werbe monastery around 1300. The year 1662 above the archway to the old cemetery (behind the church) also probably comes from the Basdorf chapel. However, it is no longer possible to say exactly whether it refers to a repair or a new construction of the chapel. In 1843 the old chapel was demolished. The legacy of a Basdorf citizen served as the basis for the new building. It is reported that almost all Basdorf families helped to build the church.

The church was completely renovated inside in 1987 and outside in 2000. In September 2011, lightning struck the church tower and the badly damaged tower roof had to be removed and replaced.
