Am Edersee There's plenty of space for your time on the water. The shore is freely accessible almost everywhere – whether at the lido or in a quiet bay. Sailing, surfing, paddling, rowing, or stand-up paddling: you decide how active you want to be. Courses and rental equipment are available on-site. Even those who prefer a more leisurely approach will find options: by pedal boat, electric boat, or passenger ship.

Anglers explore the lake in their own way—with guides or on their own. And those who prefer flowing water can simply paddle the Eder.

The Edersee offers numerous swimming opportunities – free of charge and without major infrastructure requirements. Those traveling with children will find safe entry points, shallow shorelines, and often a kiosk or restaurant nearby at the lidos such as Waldeck-West or Rehbach. Things are a bit quieter on the Scheid peninsula, with its lawn and designated dog beach. In addition, many small bays along the lake invite you to simply stop, stay, or move on.

All shore areas are freely accessible. Please be aware that some sections of the shore are steep or rocky, and there is no supervision outside of the lidos. Swimming is not permitted in designated areas, such as the waterskiing area. There are also several family-friendly outdoor pools.

    The Edersee can be easily explored from the water, whether quietly, slowly, or at a more energetic pace. Whether by electric boat, rowing boat, pedal boat, sailboat, or fishing boat: you choose the pace. Many local rental companies offer the right boat for your outdoor style. 

    Sailors will find excellent conditions on the 27 km long lake between the dam and Herzhausen, with freely accessible bays for breaks and swims. In calm weather, the lake can be glassy smooth, while in windy conditions, it can be challenging. The evening calm is well known and predictable. Sailing has a long tradition here. Regattas, state and German championships, and a Masters World Championship have already been held. The annual "Ederseemaster” is sailed in several long-distance regattas.

      Requirements for sailing on Edersee

      A sailing license is not currently required, but proof of sailing skills is required if you wish to rent a sailboat. Every skipper, whether owner or recreational captain, must be qualified to properly operate their sailboat. Official registration for any private boat is required. Edersee the right-of-way rules of the Dam Ordinance. Anchoring and sailing after sunset are not permitted, and combustion engines are also prohibited.

      Playing with the wind makes sailing an exciting water sport.

      Whether with a paddle or a sail, on Edersee and along the Eder you will find ideal conditions for calm or sporty waterways. 

      Windsurfers choose their spot based on the wind. Waldeck Bay is ideal for easterly or westerly winds, Bringhausen for easterly winds, and the barrier wall zone for northerly or southwesterly winds. Surfing is permitted throughout the lake. Restricted zones are marked by orange buoys. Passenger vessels have the right of way. 

      You can go canoeing on the Edersee or on the river itself. The Eder is Hesse's cleanest river, with a steady current and natural banks. Floodplain forests, quiet rest areas, and a diverse birdlife, including kingfishers and grey herons, make paddling a close-to-nature experience. The lake itself, at 27 kilometers long, offers plenty of space for both relaxed tours and sporting challenges—whether in a canoe, kayak, or Canadian canoe.

        Experience diversity on the water.

        With its clear water quality and approximately 12 km² area, the Edersee It is one of Germany's most fish-rich lakes. Pike, zander, perch, and many other species find ideal conditions here. Fishing is possible from boats or directly from the freely accessible shore – a rarity in Germany. 

        Fishing seasons are generously regulated: The closed season for pike begins in February and ends in mid-April. The nearby Affolderner See is also particularly popular among salmonid anglers. The Kellerwald-Edersee He holds the fishing rights and ensures sustainable management. Fishing licenses are conveniently available online at hejfish.com or at local issuing points, as day tickets, multi-day tickets, or combination tickets. Many hosts cater to anglers.
