Snow White – a short story

Snow White was a princess of rare beauty: skin as white as snow, lips as red as blood, and hair as black as ebony. Her stepmother, herself possessed of royal vanity, could not bear the thought of anyone being more beautiful than her. Out of envy, she ordered a huntsman to take Snow White to the forest and kill her.

But the huntsman took pity on Snow White. She fled deeper into the forest and found a small house where seven dwarfs lived. They took her in and protected her. But the stepmother discovered their hiding place and tried several times to kill Snow White, most recently with a poisoned apple.

Snow White fell into a deep sleep and was laid out in a glass coffin. Only when a prince passed by and saw her did she awaken through a small miracle, and with her the hope of a new, free life.

It is said that the Brothers Grimm may have been inspired by a real story when writing the fairy tale – the tragic fate of the beautiful Margaretha von Waldeck from Bad Wildungen.
